Mombo started out in elementary school playing the bass drum. By the time he got to high school, he wanted a drum set! Lucky for Mombo, his friend Ted had a set. Mombo spent hours at Teds house practicing those drums. Thanks Ma & Ted Renfro! Mombo became interested in hand drumming after watching the movie Woodstock. Playing congas & searching for exotic hand instruments became his passion for the next decade.
By the early 80s, Mombo could be found playing local gigs in his spare time. (One of his first smooth jazz gigs was with Tony Windles group Altosyndrum) In 1996, Mombo met smooth crooner Slim Man. Slim was playing in California and his wife Kim handed him a business card. Next thing he knew, Mombo was on stage with Slim warming up for superstar Craig Chaquico.
What happened next? A dream come true for Mombo, he found himself on stage with Slim at the 1996 Catalina Jazz Festival! Slim introduced Mombo to guitar smoothie Peter White and the rest is smooth jazz history!
You can find Mombo on stage with these smooth greats: Freddie Ravel, Greg Vail, Steve Oliver, Tony Windle, Eric Marienthal, Rick Braun, Jeff Gottlieb, Richard Smith, Tony Maiden, Roger Smith, & Denny Jiosa.
